🇨🇳 China's wet markets

Hi Liz,

I am writing to you today with an update on the important worldwide campaign to ban wet markets we launched in April.

Unfortunately, despite efforts made by the public and governments to stem the spread of COVID-19, the whole world is still gripped by the virus. Nine months have already passed since that fateful March which marked the beginning of the pandemic and the beginning of a new way of thinking and living.

During these months, we've been bombarded by so much (perhaps too much, and often conflicting) information. Conversations have also centered around wet markets—unsanitary places where wild animals are brutally killed on the spot to sell their meat.

In this type of market different species are confined near others they would never have contact with in nature, increasing the likelihood of disease spread. Scientists believe that COVID-19 originated in a wet market in Wuhan, China.

Between 2014 and 2019, our investigators collected shocking footage of wet markets in China, Vietnam, and India, and documented the neglect and cruelty at these places. Not only are wet markets a breeding ground for viruses lethal to humans, but they're also places where animals have no protection.

The footage we've published has been seen around the world and our petition to permanently ban wet markets has surpassed half a million global signatures thanks to your support, Liz.

As this issue is so important, we didn't stop with just one investigation. Our investigative team, in collaboration with Chinese activists, went back to the very places where the pandemic reportedly started—wet markets. We wanted to monitor the situation directly with our own eyes and see if anything had actually changed, as many media reports have repeatedly announced.

It wasn't easy to get the footage we are showing you today:

Liz, we will not give up until every animal is protected and respected.

In the next few days you'll hear from Marco, our brave undercover investigator who lived through the hell of the wet markets in Asia and much more. Marco has a lot to tell you, and as he is one of the pillars of our organization, I'm sure his experience will have a lasting impact on you.

In the meantime, thanks for everything you do for animals.

With gratitude,

P.S. Liz, our investigators worked with Chinese activists to monitor wet markets like those where COVID-19 is alleged to have originated. Here is the exclusive footage they shot: Watch the video.
