Last weekend, thousands joined us for a powerful series of actions to break free from fossil fuels: we had hundreds of people at the blockade of train tracks leading to the Pacific Northwest's biggest source of unmitigated carbon pollution, 2,000 at the Indigenous Day of Action on land and water, and nearly 1,000 at the People's Climate Conference. Huzzah!

It's always impossible to say exactly what comes of any given event, and this is a long struggle. The two refineries in Anacortes, WA that Break Free PNW took on -- like most refineries throughout the world -- are likely to continue pumping out pollutants for years. But in Anacortes and throughout the region, we helped to "move the center" considerably -- so that grandmothers, tribal members, and refinery workers alike were talking about the necessity of a just transition to a clean energy economy. This was truly an incredible collaboration, and has made our movement bigger, stronger, and broader.

Thanks to your help, Monsanto's diabolical plan to win the hearts and minds of consumers is failing.

Monsanto's profits are down. And for the first time in 20 years, the number of acres planted in GMO crops has decreased.

Nearly 40 countries have banned GMO crops.

The European Commission is under increasing pressure to reject Monsanto's request to renew its license Roundup/glyphosate, and in the U.S., more than half a million people have petitioned the EPA to do the same.

Last year, the 17 scientists on the World Health Organization's prestigious International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) panel unanimously agreed that Monsanto's Roundup is a probable human carcinogen.

This year, the grassroots food movement has blocked efforts by Monsanto and the Grocery Manufacturers Association to pass a federal law preempting Vermont's mandatory GMO labeling law. The law will take effect July 1, unless a last-ditch effort by Monsanto and Big Food stops it.

Many food companies are already labeling, or have announced plans to label their GMO ingredients. Some of those companies say they now support mandatory labeling.

It has taken nearly 20 years, but we—and that means you—have come a long way in our efforts to bring down one of the largest, most destructive, multinational corporations in the world.

But we cannot yet claim total victory. That's why we need you to get out Saturday and join a Monsanto protest near you.

We also need you to help publicize the upcoming Monsanto Tribunal, and begin organizing the world's largest protest against Monsanto, on October 16, World Food Day.

Over the last week, a global wave of actions to keep fossil fuels in the ground has been gathering momentum all over the world. Words alone are not enough to describe how powerful this moment of action is.
If you've missed any of it, here's what's happened so far in just the first 6 days of Break Free:
It started in Wales, where over 300 people shut down the UK's largest open-cast coal mine for a day.

Hours later, 10,000 people from all over the Philippines gathered in Batangas City to demand an end to coal.

In New Zealand, hundreds of people held one of the country's largest banks, ANZ, accountable for their role in funding and profiting from climate change.

In Australia, thousands of people shut down the world's largest coal port: on the water using kayaks and small boats, blockading the rail line to the port, and hanging from coal loaders to shut down work for the entire day.

All this, and it's not over yet. There are many more powerful actions planned between now and May 15th. If you're inspired by what you see, then join thousands of people across the planet in Break Free actions this week.
