USA: Send comments to stop the slaughter of Bluefin Tuna---and other creatures painfully killed and trashed as "BY-CATCH"

Did you know that the longline fish hooks commonly used by fisheries in the Gulf of Mexico needlessly snare hundreds of sea turtles, tuna, sea birds and sharks that they're not even trying to catch? Then they toss the animals they've unintentionally killed OVERBOARD!
Right now, the National Marine Fisheries Service is considering regulations that would put a stop to these deadly, wasteful longlines – but we only have until July 15 to speak out in support of these new regulations.
Among the wildlife at risk is the Western Atlantic bluefin tuna, a majestic species that only reproduces in the Gulf. Thanks to longlines and other deadly practices, their population has alreadydeclined by 72% since 1970 and they're heading for extinction.
But we have the power to keep them OFF the endangered species list: please join me in sending your message today and then ask your friends and family to do the same by July 15.
Thanks for your help!

P.S. There is further info at National Geographic Newswatch: http://newswatch.nationalgeographic.com/2012/06/20/the-bottom-line-bluefin-tuna-need-you-now/
which says in part: "After years of ineffective management in the United States, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is considering sweeping changes to the way it manages this species in the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean. But the agency needs to hear from you."

Enbridge

Sadly, the Harper government is in favor of Enbridge and the Northern Gateway project. Environmentalists, First Nations, and Spirit Bears are not.
Click for 1/12/12 Globe&Mail news story re current Enbridge leak in the Gulf of Mexico:
Enbridge reports leak from U.S. pipeline as Northern Gateway hearings begin

Save the Spirit Bear Coast!

Tell Enbridge to Abandon its Proposed Pipeline

The Northern Gateway tar sands pipeline, proposed by energy giant Enbridge, would transport the world’s dirtiest oil from the Alberta tar sands to British Columbia’s Spirit Bear Coast. Tell Enbridge to respect the wishes of the First Nations who oppose the pipeline and to withdraw its application for this destructive project.

BP

Some people try to hide the facts, and some people try to hide from the facts.
  • Researchers find underwater oil plume in Gulf Researchers say the presence of a mile-wide underwater oil plume in the Gulf of Mexico proves environmental dangers from the BP well leak remain, according to a study published in the journal Science. Scientists do not yet know the levels of toxicity present in the plume, but say degradation of the oil is occurring at one-tenth the rate it would if the oil was on the surface. Cheekiness

The Associated Press reports: Oil giant BP picks up tab for Durango fireworks
BP never displays shame or remorse, just nervy arrogance. If I were on the Durango City Council I would voice objection to accepting BP's money for fireworks. BP files false reports and is a killing machine, destroying human lives and wildlife alike. In good conscience the Council should forfeit fireworks (which in any event do not accomplish anything) and suggest that if BP still has an extra $15,000 they should allocate it to Sea Turtle Conservancy or other constructive organization.
