Bellingham WA: Dismayed at the Exporting of Logs

A couple of Geese and a Gull at Bellingham Bay 1-31-17

I was dismayed recently to read of the Port of Bellingham’s new harbor lease signed with a private company to export logs and other material to worldwide destinations from the Bellingham Shipping Terminal (BST). As I understand it, the aim is to send logs and other material to China, South Korea and Japan and other markets at the discretion of the Lessee Grand Camp International LLC. The lease was signed by the three elected Port of Bellingham Commissioners and may be viewed on the Port of Bellingham website.

For many years, Bellingham along with state and federal agencies have been cleaning up pollution left behind by 100 years of industrial use in and around Bellingham Bay. More background is available at the Washington Department of Ecology site. It seems odd to me to replace dirty industry with dirty industry. The deal was signed the first week of January 2017 and is already in motion. I only read about it (thanks to Students for The Salish Sea and NoisyWaters NW groups on Facebook) after it happened.

It is just so wrong.

Did offshore war games kill endangered West Coast orca?

Rugs?!

There are still media offensives to support hunting of polar bears, touting so-called scientific studies and polar bear abundance---click HERE for an example. This is why protecting polar bears and fighting the inhumanity are all the more imperative.

From Center for Biological Diversity - Click for LINK
Polar bears are in big trouble from accelerating Arctic warming and a vanishing sea-ice habitat. This year's skyrocketing fur prices and trophy hunting are also taking a devastating toll. Polar bear sport-hunting and the trophy trade are prohibited in the United States, but the international trade in polar bear parts is alive and well.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is now deciding whether it will move to protect polar bears under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species. At the last round of CITES negotiations, the Service led the charge to ban all commercial trade in polar bear parts -- a move Canada blocked. The agency is now "undecided" on its position for the upcoming CITES meeting.
Canada still kills around 500 bears annually and leads the world in exporting rugs and hunting trophies. As polar bear numbers plummet under pressure from climate change, the Canadian territory of Nunavut quadrupled its hunting quota this season.
Tell the Service to take a stand against this excessive killing, stop the international trade in their parts and lead the world in polar bear protection.

Enbridge

Sadly, the Harper government is in favor of Enbridge and the Northern Gateway project. Environmentalists, First Nations, and Spirit Bears are not.
Click for 1/12/12 Globe&Mail news story re current Enbridge leak in the Gulf of Mexico:
Enbridge reports leak from U.S. pipeline as Northern Gateway hearings begin

Save the Spirit Bear Coast!

Tell Enbridge to Abandon its Proposed Pipeline

The Northern Gateway tar sands pipeline, proposed by energy giant Enbridge, would transport the world’s dirtiest oil from the Alberta tar sands to British Columbia’s Spirit Bear Coast. Tell Enbridge to respect the wishes of the First Nations who oppose the pipeline and to withdraw its application for this destructive project.
