Bellingham WA: Happy Mothers' Day to a Deer and her two Youngsters

My little Google photo collection Urban doe and two fawns shows a beautiful family peacefully perusing the Whatcom Creek Greenway early May 7, 2022. They crossed Cornwall Avenue along the way. Deer have been here about 10,000 years. They are native to  western North America. These are black-tailed deer (Odocoileus hemionus). The Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife has a lot of information on deer. The biologists there are aware of typical deer routes and their degree of collisions with motorists. Deer travel long distances in Bellingham. It is against the law to harm deer in the city. The urban environment is becoming a alarmingly densified with us invasive humans. We need Mother Nature. Nature doesn't need us. I hope all generations of people will do their duty to protect Gaia's land, air, water and inhabitants. USA: Wildlife corridors are important for ecology and public safety

As infrastructure is built, rebuilt & maintained it is wise to incorporate #wildlifecorridors 🦇

It is also important to clean up litter and toxins from roadways and underpasses.

Humans should be prevented from loitering, occupying or camping in areas designated for wildlife-friendly habitat. 

Indiana/Kentucky border USA & beyond: Tens of thousands of confined birds euthanized and composted due to incidents of avian flu

How many media outlets will even inform their readers about the latest avian flu outbreaks in the USA? The links below from Reuters and APHIS touch on the current news. Thousands #turkeys have been recently killed (I believe the jargon is "depopulated") and composted in Indiana, as well as thousands of chickens in the vicinity.  It is highly contagious among fowl - not people - so the routine is to euthanize to prevent spread.  There were huge euthanization actions taken in previous years, e.g., 2020, 2016, and 2015 (search TheGuardian.com and other sources for details). The financial loss as a result of outbreaks, protocols, and loss of "product" is significant. It would be much easier on the heart, environment and economy to raise vegetables.

Photos which press may include in such cases sometimes portray single "farmed" birds in the great outdoors or some other unrealistic scene. Confined Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) are horror shows. And that is just the USA. It is likely unimaginably worse in some other countries. This is a hellish existence for turkeys, chickens, ducks, geese, pigs, cows, minks and many other species. Bellingham WA: Dismayed at the Exporting of Logs

I was dismayed recently to read of the Port of Bellingham’s new harbor lease signed with a private company to export logs and other material to worldwide destinations from the Bellingham Shipping Terminal (BST). As I understand it, the aim is to send logs and other material to China, South Korea and Japan and other markets at the discretion of the Lessee Grand Camp International LLC. The lease was signed by the three elected Port of Bellingham Commissioners and may be viewed on the Port of Bellingham website.

For many years, Bellingham along with state and federal agencies have been cleaning up pollution left behind by 100 years of industrial use in and around Bellingham Bay. More background is available at the Washington Department of Ecology site. It seems odd to me to replace dirty industry with dirty industry. The deal was signed the first week of January 2017 and is already in motion. I only read about it (thanks to Students for The Salish Sea and NoisyWaters NW groups on Facebook) after it happened.
