2013 YEAR IN REVIEW: PROTECTING BIRDS AND THEIR HABITAT

11 Million Acres Saved in Alaska. The Interior Department announced permanent protection for 11 million acres of critical Arctic bird habitat in Northwest Alaska. Many of our most familiar migratory birds began life in this vast wilderness of the Western Arctic Reserve.

GBBC Goes Global. The Great Backyard Bird Count became a worldwide event in 2013. More than 104,000 people from 107 countries identified a staggering 4,004 species!

A "Stork Occasion" in the Everglades. Audubon and conservation partners reached a settlement that will prevent destruction of more than 1100 acres of wetlands adjacent to the renowned Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary. The sanctuary is home to the nation's largest breeding colony of endangered Wood Storks.

Western Rivers Action Network. All politics is local, a fact that underlay the launch of a new citizen action network to save endangered river habitats in Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado. At stake is habitat for priority birds like the Yellow-billed Cuckoo and vulnerable migrants like the Golden Eagle.

Hummingbirds at Home. Is climate change impacting hummingbird migration or breeding success? We've turned to citizen science for the answers by launching Hummingbirds at Home, a smartphone-based tracking project. In the first year, more than 8,400 volunteer spotters reported over 21,000 hummingbird sightings, adding critical intelligence to conservation efforts.

Saving the River of Raptors. Audubon Pennsylvania and allies won a 10-year battle to prevent construction of a huge car racing resort on the Kittatinny Ridge. The ridge is a critical migratory path for millions of hawks and eagles and is home to the world-famous Hawk Mountain Sanctuary.

Thank you! Here's to even bigger successes in 2014!

Center for Biological Diversity
Dear Liz,
Endangered species condoms
By New Year's Eve the Center for Biological Diversity will have given away half a million condoms as part of our innovative Population and Sustainability program. That's at least a million conversations we've started about human population growth and the species extinction crisis.

To hit that milestone, we're giving away 25,000 of our free Endangered Species Condoms before the end of the year -- and we need your help. These witty, award-winning condom packages feature six species threatened by our human population's massive number -- now topping 7 billion -- and are packed with great info to get those conversations started.

We're looking for 300 volunteers to help us distribute these condoms in every state across the country next month. We want them handed out at office parties, community events, family gatherings, churches, libraries, college campuses -- anywhere to start a conversation about this important issue.

If you want to be a volunteer distributor this holiday season please sign up today. The deadline to volunteer is Friday, Dec. 6. Even if you've signed up in the past, you'll need to sign up again to be a part of this special giveaway. And make sure to include your current mailing address so we can send you a box of condom packages if you're selected.

Every condom handed out is the start of a new conversation about the devastating effect rampant human population growth has on other species. Sign up now, and help get people talking about the extinction crisis and how we can help save panthers, polar bears, hellbenders, dwarf seahorses -- and humans.

Sincerely,

Taralynn Reynolds
Population and Sustainability Organizer

P.S. We'd love to hear your plans for how you'd share Endangered Species Condoms in your area. Sign up before Friday, Dec. 6 to tell us your ideas.

USA: Baiting, trapping, and killing marine life---CONTACT NOAA

Fishermen are killing Atlantic bluefin tuna at shocking rates. Urge NOAA to protect these "tigers of the sea" before it's too late.
Action Alert
Atlantic bluefin tuna are being recklessly killed – populations have already dropped by 64%!

Unless we stop wasteful and destructive longline fishing, these magnificent fish are in danger of extinction.
Liz -
Atlantic bluefin tuna are considered the "tigers of the sea" for their remarkable speed, their killer hunting abilities and their impressive size – a single fish can weigh up to 1,500 pounds!
But these big fish have a truly huge problem - LONGLINES.
Surface longlines float in the water, stretching up to 40 miles and strung with hundreds of baited hooks that dangle down into the ocean, snagging any creatures that show an interest in their bait, including severely depleted bluefin tuna.
Time is running out to stop this careless, deadly practice – we only have until 12/10 to convince NOAA to protect bluefin tuna.
Unfortunately, longlines not only catch and kill swordfish and other "target" fish, but also bluefin tuna and 80 other unfortunate "non-target" species in the process.
This shockingly careless method of fishing is taking a toll – Atlantic bluefin tuna populations have already declined by as much as 64%!
Don't leave bluefin tuna dangling on these deadly longlines – urge NOAA to take the measures needed to protect these incredible fish before the 12/10 deadline for public comments.
Last year, surface longline fishermen were required to throw back, dead, almost 25% of the U.S. bluefin tuna catch. Worse yet, much of this tragic waste took place in the Gulf of Mexico, a documented spawning ground for western Atlantic bluefin tuna.
Earlier this year, more than 190,000 friends of bluefin tuna urged NOAA (the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) to protect these impressive fish from wasteful surface longline fishing.
NOAA responded by releasing proposed measures to protect this incredible fish but their proposal does not go far enough to truly protect the tuna – more changes are needed!
Add your voice now to call for greater bluefin tuna protections in the Gulf of Mexico and off North Carolina, fair bluefin quota allocations, increased monitoring of the longline fleet, and an end of the sickening waste of this incredible fish.
Sincerely,
Kevin Curtis

Oklahoma: Extreme Animal Cruelty Exposed at Tyson Pig Factory Farm---Sign the petition!

Date: Wed, 20 Nov 2013 10:17:44 -0500
From: info@mercyforanimals.org
Subject: Breaking News: Extreme Animal Cruelty Exposed at Tyson Pig Factory Farm

       Dear Gail,
Tyson supports torture.
That's what a brand-new Mercy For Animals undercover investigation reveals.
A brave MFA investigator has uncovered some of the most sadistic animal abuse we have ever seen at a Tyson Foods hog factory farm—a major Walmart pork supplier. The hidden-camera video footage was recorded at a Tyson contract farm in Oklahoma and shows the following:
  • Workers viciously punching, kicking, beating, and violently shaking animals and pulling out their hair
  • Piglets having their tails hacked off and their testicles ripped out of their bodies without painkillers
  • Workers slamming conscious piglets headfirst against the ground and spiking them like footballs
  • Pregnant pigs confined to tiny, maggot-infested gestation crates barely able to move for their entire lives
  • Workers shoving their fingers into pigs' eyes and hitting them with wooden boards
  • Piglets left to suffer and slowly die on dead piles without proper veterinary care
  • A worker throwing a heavy bowling ball at a pig's head
News of MFA's latest investigation broke this morning on NBC National News. Click here to read the story.
Law enforcement is currently investigating and we are confident that the workers caught on video maliciously abusing animals will be arrested and convicted of criminal cruelty to animals.
But even after these workers are brought to justice, mother pigs and their piglets will continue to suffer unimaginable abuse at the hands of Tyson Foods.
In fact, some of the worst forms of cruelty we documented at this facility are considered standard and acceptable practice by Tyson, including locking mother pigs for their entire lives in cruel gestation crates barely larger than their own bodies.
Such inhumane confinement of these sensitive and intelligent animals leads to deprivation, injury, isolation, frustration, and depression.
This is the fourth investigation Mercy For Animals has conducted at a Walmart pork supplier. It's clear that the time for the world's largest retailer to demand change from its pork suppliers is now. This cruelty must end.

We need your help in calling on Tyson, and Walmart, to put an end to one of the cruelest factory farming practices by ditching gestation crates.
And remember, the best way to help pigs and other farmed animals is simply to stop eating them and adopt a compassionate vegan diet.
Sincerely,

Nathan Runkle
Executive Director

USA: Mr. President, This Thanksgiving Pardon...the Polar Bear

Every year the president pardons a lucky turkey for Thanksgiving.

Well, as sea ice disappears and the climate tanks, we think it's about time the president extended that courtesy to polar bears.

That's why the Center's own Frostpaw the Polar Bear is making a special pilgrimage to Washington D.C. next week.

Starting Nov. 18, Frostpaw will be camped out in front of the White House every day till Thanksgiving delivering an urgent and unmistakable message: Reject Keystone XL and phase out all the deadly fossil fuel projects driving polar bears -- and the rest of us -- into hot water.

But we need you to help us "Pardon the Polar Bears."

Please take action now to tell Obama to pardon the polar bear and reject Keystone XL this Thanksgiving.

Click here to take action and get more information.

Take action here: http://action.biologicaldiversity.org/p/dia/action3/common/public/?action_KEY=14557

Then, if you'll be in Washington, D.C. between Nov. 18 and 28, please contact the Center's No Keystone campaigner, Valerie Love, to help out. We hope you can join us -- you may even get the opportunity to play Frostpaw yourself.

USA & world: A simple way to keep thousands of whales out of fishing nets

From: NRDC - Frances Beinecke <biogemsdefenders@savebiogems.org>
Date: Thu, Nov 7, 2013 at 12:19 PM
Subject: A simple way to keep thousands of whales out of fishing nets

NRDC -- Natural Resources Defense Council -- Stop the Deadly Catch!

Dear Liz,
This whale got away.
Save Whales Now
But 650,000 other marine mammals weren't so lucky. That's how many are injured or killed every year by foreign fishing fleets. Tell the Obama Administration to help stop these senseless and avoidable deaths!
Take action

Dolphins trapped in massive gillnets ... sea lions hooked on longlines ... whales entangled in crab and lobster pots, unable to move.

That's the tragic reality for more than 650,000 marine mammals every year that are seriously injured or even killed by foreign fishing fleets, according to a forthcoming NRDC report.

The numbers alone are staggering. What's more, the accidental capture -- or "bycatch" -- of these magnificent ocean creatures is pushing some of them to the brink of extinction.

The good news is: there's a very simple solution at hand -- if the Obama Administration would only choose to use it.

Tell the National Marine Fisheries Service to enforce our import law
and protect marine mammals from injury and death in foreign fisheries!

The landmark Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972 requires all imported seafood to be caught in accordance with U.S. standards for protecting marine mammals.

But this lifesaving measure has never been enforced by the federal government!

Meanwhile, countless marine mammals -- including endangered species like the North Atlantic right whale and the New Zealand sea lion -- remain in grave and constant danger.

Most Americans would be shocked to know that the majority of foreign seafood -- from sea bass to lowly fish sticks -- violates federal law, and that our government has been doing nothing to stop it.

But change may be at hand, if we act now. The Fisheries Service is about to propose new rules that could save thousands of marine mammals by enforcing the law on seafood imports.

Please urge the Fisheries Service to issue strict rules and ban imports from foreign fisheries that continue to injure and kill marine mammals in violation of U.S. standards.

With your help, I believe we can persuade the Obama Administration to do the right thing -- and save the lives of countless marine mammals around the world. Please join me and NRDC in making your voice heard right away.

Sincerely,
Frances
